On a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon in Rosario’s Parque Independencia, the 274th derby between the two top division sides in the city was a predictably cagey affair without either team taking the initiative to win the game.
Newell’s dominated possession throughout but showed little up front, with no shots on target from 8 attempted. Central fared a little bit better on the counter attack but all of their 4 shots on target were dealt with easily by Lucas Hoyos.
Most of the spectacle of the game was off the pitch; Central goalkeeper Jorge Broun bloodied by a missile before the match started and a smoke bomb with the colours of the opposition team flown over the stadium to incite the home fans.
San Lorenzo fan account Cuervo Inglés noted on Twitter yesterday that the Clásico Rosarino was “a clásico for flags and fireworks, not football”. Spectators of Sunday’s stalemate would surely would find it hard to disagree.
Back to playing football for Newell’s (hopefully) with an away trip to Racing on Wednesday at El Cilindro.
