Newell’s Old Boys exited the Copa Sudamericana at the Round of 16 stage after a scoreless draw with Corinthians at home on Tuesday night.
La Lepra exhausted all options on the night to try and force a goal to at least take the game to extra-time but 26 shots on goal yielded no results.
In truth, there were no clear-cut chances that might have gone in – most of the efforts were tame and easily met by confident Corinthians stopper Cassio.
Gabriel Heinze started with a defensive line-up, dropping Marcos Portillo who scored in the first-leg. El Gringo waited until late in the second-half to introduce players like Brian Aguirre, Ramiro Sordo, Jeremías Pérez Tica and Portillo but by then, the Brazilian side had nearly eleven players behind the ball with all holes sealed.
It was a disappointing end to a promising campaign where Newell’s finished unbeaten in the group stages and topped Group E.
The squad must now look forward to the start of the Copa de la Liga which commences towards the end of this month.
