An early 9th minute goal from Libertad’s Sebastián Ferreira propelled the Paraguayans to the top of Group F in this year’s Copa Sudamericana.
Newell’s Old Boys dominated possession throughout the match but were out of ideas when it came to attacking despite ample opportunities to push forward and score. It was yet another game under El Mono Burgos where the team play should have yielded a better result.
Young forward Luciano Cingolani received his marching orders in injury-time for a second yellow card.
Newell’s Old Boys now have to win their remaining two games, at home against Atlético Goianiense and Palestino, to have any chance of qualifying while Libertad are in pole position to go through from the group having now won three games with two to play.
