A much-changed Newell’s side put in a lacklustre performance in the capital on Saturday night, going down 1-0 to Frank Kudelka’s Lanús.
With one eye on Wednesday’s away game against Blooming in Bolivia where Newell’s have the chance to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Copa Sudamericana, Gabriel Heinze made six changes to the team that beat Arsenal last week.
The top performer from that game, Ramiro Sordo, was benched along with midfielder Iván Gómez and four others.
While a Newell’s second-string side had won away at Racing earlier in the season, there was no repeat performance at La Fortaleza and a superior Lanús side moved up to 7th in the Liga AFA thanks to Leandro Díaz’s 15th minute goal. In truth, Lanús could have had more and a single-goal margin flattered La Lepra who showed nothing in attack.
