Newell’s Old Boys succumbed to another defeat on Saturday, the team’s 6th loss in the last 9 games, as Gimnasia took all three points in La Plata.
Johan Carbonero, who scored in Gimnasia’s win over Newell’s back in April, was again the difference maker. He netted the only goal of the game shortly before half-time, rushing up the pitch and taking advantage of a Newell’s defensive mistake to finish past Ramiro Macagno who was making his first start of the season for La Lepra.
The second-half was a dire affair, with neither team threatening, and Fernando Gamboa will presumably fight for his job when Newell’s meet 24th-placed Aldosivi in Rosario on Thursday.
