Newell’s Old Boys suffered a disappointing defeat to Central Córdoba (Santiago del Estero) on Friday night as La Lepra continued to stutter when playing away from home.
Gabriel Heinze’s side were not short on chances and their attacking play brought a number of shots on target but Matías Mansilla in goal for Central Córdoba had a fine game, making a string of impressive stops.
Gonzalo Goñi opened the scoring in the first-half for the home side when Newell’s failed to clear a corner; Goñi shooting past Hoyos inside the box when the ball fell kindly for him.
La Lepra spent a large amount of the match trying to equalise. That didn’t come to fruition thanks in-part to Mansilla and Lucas Gamba put the game beyond doubt with minutes to go when he caught Lucas Hoyos off his line. Shooting from the half-way line, Gamba’s effort was on-target and finally hit the net with the back-tracking Hoyos desperately trying to prevent the goal.
