Newell’s Old Boys made it 3 league wins in a row since the resignation of Javier Sanguinetti after a hard-fought win away at Aldosivi on Wednesday.
Fielding another youthful team, interim head coach Adrián Coria watched on as his troops created a number of clear cut chances in the first-half but it was an own-goal that gave Newell’s the advantage before half-time. Exciting 19-year-old Brian Aguirre whipped a free-kick into the box from the left and unfortunate Aldosivi attacker Martín Cauteruccio deflected the ball past his own keeper after taking a tumble in the 6-yard box.
Newell’s should have added to that lead in the first period but Gustavo Velázquez, Djorkaeff Reasco and Juan Garro all missed the target when it looked easier to score.
The lead was doubled by the captain for the day, Juan Manuel García, when he was fed by a counter-attacking Reasco and put through on goal. He rounded goalkeeper José Devecchi in the Aldosivi net before walking the ball over the line. Newell’s had to wait around 3 minutes for VAR to check if García was in an onside position when Reasco passed the ball but when the referee was given the green light to award the goal, celebrations ensued.
Newell’s survived a late barrage of attacks from Aldosivi to secure the 3 points, despite an impressive consolation from defender Patricio Boolsen who chipped Lautaro Morales from inside the box. Tomás Jacob was the hero late on, heading the ball off the Newell’s line in the seventh minute of added time to make sure of the victory for La Lepra.
