Newell’s Old Boys bounced back from last week’s defeat to Unión to record a narrow 1-0 home win against Patronato on Friday night at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
The goal came late, an edge-of-the-box strike from substitute Ramiro Sordo in the 78th minute finally putting some sparkle on what was a dull game that lacked entertainment.
Newell’s lost goalkeeper Ramiro Macagno to injury in the first half, meaning 18-year-old Franco Herrera, the squad’s fourth-choice keeper, was given a debut. He was only in the squad because third-choice keeper Felipe San Juan withdrew with fever before the game. Herrera carried himself well, making two important saves in the second-half to secure a clean sheet on his first professional game.
