Newell’s Stun Boca Juniors 2-0

Newell’s Old Boys delivered a stunning 2-0 victory over Boca Juniors at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, halting Boca’s impressive six-game winning streak in the Torneo Apertura 2025. The match saw Newell’s capitalise on early opportunities and a missed penalty by Boca to secure a deserved win.

Newell’s came out firing under new manager Cristian “El Ogro” Fabbiani. In the 5th minute, a long ball from Keylor Navas found Carlos González, who outmuscled Di Lollo. González then laid the ball off to Luciano Herrera, who finished superbly past Agustín Marchesín to give Newell’s an early lead.

While Boca dominated possession after the goal, they struggled to break down Newell’s organised defence and high pressing. Newell’s were effective in attack, and their pressure paid off again in added time when Luciano Lollo headed home an Éver Banega cross, making it 2-0 before halftime.

Newell’s nearly extended their lead early in the second half, with both González and Maroni hitting the post. However, a turning point came when Ander Herrera was forced off injured and Boca was awarded a penalty. Edinson Cavani stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort hit the right post, with the rebound from Rodrigo Battaglia also hitting the same post.

The missed penalty seemed to deflate Boca, who resorted to hopeful crosses. Newell’s continued to threaten on the counter-attack. Marchesín made a crucial save to prevent a third goal, but Boca were unable to find a breakthrough, with a shot from Zenon proving to be their best effort.

Newell’s now prepare to face Kimberley in the Copa Argentina and then league leaders Tigre in the Apertura.
