Newell’s Shock Tigre 2-0 Away, Knocking Them Off Top Spot

In a surprising turn of events last night, Newell’s Old Boys secured a crucial 2-0 away victory against Tigre, knocking the home side off the top position in Zone A and keeping their own hopes alive for a place in the round of 16.

Under persistent rainfall at Victoria, La Lepra delivered the upset of the matchday with a performance characterised by clinical finishing and an exceptional display from goalkeeper Keylor Navas, whose heroics repeatedly denied the home side.

Newell’s took an early lead when Cuesta rose highest to head home from a corner kick, catching Tigre goalkeeper Zenobio off guard. The goal came against the run of play in what was Newell’s first meaningful attack of the match.

The pattern of the game was firmly established after the opener, with Tigre launching wave after wave of attacks while Newell’s defended desperately. Despite manager Ogro Fabbiani setting up with a five-man defensive line, the rojinegro backline struggled to clear their lines consistently, leaving Navas exposed to numerous threats.

The Costa Rican shot-stopper proved equal to every challenge, however, producing a series of spectacular saves to maintain Newell’s advantage heading into the break.

The second half followed a similar script, with Tigre dominating possession but unable to find a way past an inspired Navas. Russo came closest for the hosts, firing narrowly wide when well-positioned.

As Tigre pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Newell’s struck again on the counter. Ever Banega produced a moment of magic in midfield, skillfully evading two opponents before releasing Martino down the flank. When Tigre defender Laso could only partially clear Martino’s cross, Herrera was perfectly positioned to fire a first-time shot high beyond Zenobio.

The victory marks a significant turnaround for Newell’s after their recent poor form in Argentine football. Despite being outplayed for large portions of the match, the team’s clinical finishing and defensive resilience secured all three points, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

With this result, Newell’s have reignited their campaign and proven they can compete with the best in the division as they continue their pursuit of knockout stage qualification.
