Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 21 September 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United took all three points in their first home game of the Premier League season, beating Fulham 4-3 at Elland Road. Bielsa’s side have now scored 7 and conceded 7 in their opening two games of the season.

Although his playing career ended 40 years ago, Bielsa showed during the match that he still retains some silky skills:

FRANCE

Mauro Icardi started and played the full match in PSG’s 0-3 away win at OGC Nice.

Cristian Battocchio came on after 76 minutes in Stade Brest’s second win on the trot in Ligue 1, a 3-2 home win against Lorient.

ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi, who celebrated his birthday during the week, was a starter in Torino’s opening Serie A match of the season but he couldn’t prevent his side losing 1-0 away at Fiorentina.

Nicolás Spolli was an unused substitute as Crotone returned to the Serie A. It was an unhappy occasion as the Pitagorici lost 4-1 to Genoa.

NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez scored Ajax’s third goal with a brilliant header in their 3-0 home win against RKC Waalwijk as the Eredivisie returned.

RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce was on the scoresheet again for Spartak Moscow. On 16 September, he came on as a substitute after 62 minutes and added a fifth goal as Spartak defeated Rodina 1-5 in the Russian Cup. In league action, he played for 88 minutes in their 0-2 away win at Rubin Kazan on 20 September.

GREECE

Daniel Mancini appeared off the bench on 63 minutes in Aris Thessaloniki’s 0-1 away win at NFC Volos in the Greek Super League.

CYPRUS

Adrian Lucero and Emanuel Dening‘s Enosis Neon Paralimniou lost again in Cyprus. Lucero started and was substituted in the second half while Dening came off the bench in their 0-2 defeat to APOEL Nicosia.

UNITED STATES

Milton Valenzuela started and played the full game in high-flying Columbus Crew’s 2-0 win against Nashville on 20 September.

Franco Escobar played the full match and received a yellow card in Atlanta United’s 1-2 home defeat to Inter Miami as Tata Martino’s former side continue to struggle in the MLS.

MEXICO

Nahuél Guzmán was outstanding in Tigres’ 3-0 win over Querétaro on 20 September, saving his 16th penalty since joining the Mexican club.

ECUADOR

Braian Rivero played his part in Independiente del Valle’s historic 5-0 thrashing of holders Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores. The former Newell’s midfielder grabbed an assist for IDV’s fifth goal, setting up man-of-the-match Beder Caicedo for this injury-time long range strike.

Francisco Fydriszewski scored with a brilliant finish as LDU Portoviejo got back to winning ways against CD Olmedo (1-2) in the LigaPro Serie A.

Victor Figueroa was the provider for Aucas who drew 2-2 away to Orense. The former Newell’s legend floated a cross onto the head of fellow Argentine Sergio López for the Quito side’s second goal.
