Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 3 August

Icardi filled the Coupe de la Ligue with fernet, the Italian amaro popular in Argentina

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 3 August 2020. With many leagues now winding down for a break, some ex-Newell’s players were still in action in Italy, France and the US.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

FRANCE

Mauro Icardi got his hands on silverware again as PSG won the Coupe de la Ligue on penalties after a 0-0 draw in normal time against Lyon. Icardi started the game but was withdrawn after 58 minutes.

The Rosario native celebrated just as most Argentines do, by drinking a fernet after the game:

Cristian Battocchio scored in a friendly for Stade Brest who drew 2-2 with Lorient.

ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi played for 75 minutes in Torino’s home defeat to Roma (2-3) on 27 July while on 2 August, he played for 50 minutes and was yellow carded in the 1-1 draw with Bologna. Torino finished above the relegation zone in 16th position and retain their place in Serie A next season.

Nehuén Paz suffered relegation with Lecce and wasn’t able to help them avoid the drop in their final game against Parma due to a ban. Paz will now return to his parent club Bologna who finished 12th and will stay in Serie A next season. At Lecce, Paz played 13 times with a record of W5-2D-6L.

UNITED STATES

Milton Valenzuela couldn’t prevent Columbus Crew being eliminated from the MLS is Back tournament. He played for 64 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Minnesota United which was decided by penalties with the Crew losing 3-5.

Atlanta United and Montreal Impact, the teams of Franco Escobar and Maxi Urruti, have both already been eliminated from the tournament meaning no ex-Newell’s players will feature in the semi-final stage.
