Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 13 July 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United started the week with an emphatic 5-0 win at home to Stoke City.

Then, on 13 July, they had Pablo Hernández to thank for a late goal away to Swansea City which meant they left Wales with all 3 points, putting them the same amount of points clear at the top of the English Championship. 4 points from their remaining 3 games would guarantee promotion back to the Premier League for El Loco’s side.

Check out this commentary from Argentina from Jerónimo Torres Santoro for Hernández’s goal:

Lucas Boyé came on as a substitute for the final four minutes in Reading’s 0-0 draw with Huddersfield on 7 July while he was an unused substitute in Reading’s 0-1 away win at Charlton Athletic on 11 July.

SPAIN

Lionel Messi played a part in two consecutive 1-0 wins for Barcelona. On 8 July, he played a full 90 minutes in the Barcelona derby as Los Culés overcame relegated rivals Espanyol while on 11 July he provided an assist in their win over Real Valladolid.

Éver Banega was the star of the show in Sevilla’s 1-2 away win at Athletic Club on 9 July, coming away with a stunning goal and an assist. Three days later, he played 82 minutes in their 2-0 victory over RCD Mallorca.

RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce was scored a header and was named Man of the Match in Spartak’s 1-1 draw with Moscow rivals Lokomotiv. He didn’t have as much luck in their second game of the week though, playing a full 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Sochi.

GREECE

Daniel Mancini played a full 90-minutes in a defeat to Olympiakos (2-4) and a victory (0-1) over OFI Crete without scoring on 8 & 11 July respectively. Teammate Martín Tonso didn’t feature in either game.

Adrian Lucero was a late substitute in Panetolikos’ 0-2 away win against relegation rivals Panionios.

ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi started and played for 75 minutes in Torino’s 3-1 win over Brescia.

Nehuén Paz had arguably his best week in a Lecce shirt, playing a key role in their win 2-1 over Lazio in Serie A on 7 July and their goalless draw with Cagliari on Sunday.

UNITED STATES

The MLS is Back tournament got underway in the US but it was disappointment for Atlanta United’s Franco Escobar who suffered a 0-1 defeat to New York Red Bulls. He played the entire game at right-back.

Maxi Urruti was also in action but he also tasted defeat, playing 75 minutes in Montreal Impact’s 0-1 to New England Revolution who had the Argentine Gustavo Bou to thank for their victory.
