Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 29 June

Bielsa and his coaching staff take the knee prior to Leeds’ home win over Fulham.

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 29 June 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United jumped back on top of the EFL Championship after a 3-0 home demolishing of 4th placed Fulham. Bielsa’s changes in the second half which included the introduction of Ezgjan Alioski and Pablo Hernández completely changed the game in Leeds’ favour.

SPAIN

It was 3 assists in 2 games for Lionel Messi as the Barcelona no.10 turned into chief creator. Against Athletic, he set up Ivan Rakitić’s winner while on 27 June he was the provider again for both of Luis Suárez’s goals in the 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo. The pick of the assist was this smart free-kick:

Éver Banega was SofaScore’s highest rated player in Sevilla’s 1-1 draw with Real Valladolid in La Liga on 26 June. Banega has already agreed to join Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia when his contract expires on 1 July.

RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce was replaced after 84 minutes in Spartak Moscow’s bore draw 0-0 against FC Ufa.

GREECE

Daniel Mancini opened the scoring in Aris Thessaloniki’s 2-2 draw with AEK in the Greek Cup Semi-Final on 24 June. It wasn’t enough to stop AEK going through on aggregate. Martín Tonso also played. 4 days later, the two ex-Newell’s men again started together in Aris’ 0-2 home defeat to PAOK in the league.

Joaquín Torres was introduced as a substitute afterr 87 minutes but couldn’t prevent 9-man Volos FC losing 3-1 to AE Larisa.

Adrián Lucero came on as a substitute for Panetolikos after 74 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Asteras Tripolis.

ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi came on as a 59th minute substitute in Torino’s 4-2 loss to Cagliari in Serie A.

It was also a disappointing week for Nehuén Paz who played a full 90 minutes in Lecce’s 4-0 defeat to league leaders Juventus.
