Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 22 June

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 22 June 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United suffered a 2-0 defeat in their return to action in England. The promotion hunters left Wales with 0 points in a match they dominated against Cardiff City.


SPAIN

Newell’s Old Boys fanatics Lionel Messi and Éver Banega were reunited as Barcelona and Sevilla played out a goalless draw in La Liga. Banega was introduced as a substitute for Sevilla after 46 minutes while Messi played the whole game for Barca.


RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce picked up where he left off before the lockdown by scoring in Spartak Moscow’s 3-2 away win at Arsenal Tulu. Spartak sit in 6th place in the Russian Premier League.


GREECE

Martín Tonso and Daniel Mancini both started and played the entire game for Aris Thessaloniki in their 2-2 draw against AEK Athens. Mancini was yellow carded. The teams meet again in the Greek Cup this week.

Joaquín Torres was introduced as a substitute afterr 87 minutes but couldn’t prevent 9-man Volos FC losing 3-1 to AE Larisa.

Adrián Lucero came on in injury-time for Panetolikos in their 1-1 draw with Xanthi. The ex-Newell’s man has now appeared in all 3 games since football returned in Greece – his first games since December 2019.


ITALY

Nehuén Paz was an unused sub in Lecce’s 1-4 home defeat to AC Milan.
